Touring New Zealand's North Island by Campervan
The views of Cape Maria van Diemen from the track to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse are stunningly beautiful. The cape was named in January 1643 by Abel Tasman, after the wife of his
patron, Anthony van Diemen, Governor General of Batavia.
Cape Reinga is sacred to the Maori, who know it as Te Rerenga Wairua.
Tradition says that the cape is the point where the spirits of the dead leave the earth.
